International Symposium
Audiovisual archives and memory in the digital age

Tunis, 5-6 December 2013
Organizer: Research Unit "Digital Library and Heritage" - Higher Institute of Documentation, University of Manouba, Tunisia
Responsible: Mohamed Salah Kadri & Tarek Ouerfelli

The renewed interest in audiovisual documents as an integral part of the heritage and cultural memory has led to a rise of archival activity. The question of the preservation of the audiovisual archives can not be discussed without taking into account the development of technologies. Indeed, the development of tools for processing and preserving of archives gives new prospects for the transmission of this heritage but simultaneously reveals new challenges mainly legal and cultural. One of the most important challenges for the conservation of these archives is how to reconcile the active preservation imposed by the technical nature of audiovisual content and authenticity of the documents? Archives can not be conceived as a trace of the past but as fixed content, the active preservation can reinvent the past.

The debate on the issues of preservation of audiovisual archives with regard to readability issues related to technical content becomes necessary. In addition, the rapid development of technologies and the proliferation of networks evokes, in one way or another, the different issues related to the constitution of audiovisual archives in their restitution and enhancement.
Both developed and developing countries adopt strategies to preserve their cultural heritage and protect it from loss. Thus, the preservation of audiovisual archives requires, in addition to adequate legal and institutional framework, the implementation of specific programs, where the use of Information and Communication Technologies occupies an important place.

As such, it is essential for researchers in the Humanities and Social Sciences, professionals in information and communication field and audiovisual specialists to develop deep thinking on the context and issues of use and interoperability of technical and audiovisual resources that are both a witness of the progress of activities in a given sector and an important heritage source. How can we combine archival preservation and fidelity to the memory? How far can we consider that the audiovisual archives have probative value and a tool for good governance? How can we enhance the diversity of uses and content and invaluable pedagogical opportunities they offer? How can the digital age change our relationship to memory? These are questions that will be debated in this conference.
