Online access to Danish radio and television programmes

2011 has been an efficient year for the State and University Library in Denmark. One of the main goals for the library in 2011 has been to modernize students’ and researchers’ access to one of the most requested Danish audio visual collections: The collection of Danish radio and television spanning the years 2006-2011 with more than 500.000 hours of radio and television programmes.
More than 500.000 hours of radio and television
In 2011 the State and University Library has developed a new online service named Mediestream. Via Mediestream users are able to not only browse the collection of Danish radio and television (2006 - 2011) from their own labtop computer from anywhere in the world, but also to stream radio and television programmes in their full length.

Mediestream allows users to:

• Browse a catalog of Danish radio and television since 2006 with elaborated metadata.
• Play a 30 seconds preview before streaming a programme in its full length
• View different still photographs from each television programme at the click of a button
• Stream Danish radio and television programmes since 2006 to their personal labtops.

The State and University Library in Denmark launched Mediestream in 2011 for patrons who visit the library. Coming spring 2012 Danish university researchers, teachers and students will be able to access Mediestream online. The actual date of launch depends on the results of ongoing negotiations with the organizations acting on behalf of the rights owners.

Mediestream is expected to increase the use of the already highly requested collection of audio visual cultural heritage providing both in time and smooth access to a rich documentation of Danish broadcast history and broadcasting programmes. However, Mediestream is a service that in time will provide access to many different media formats and collections. Therefore the word stream in Mediestream does not only refer to online streaming, but also to the general flow of media and the many different media trends.
